Alive and Kicking

Alive and Kicking.

Golden Earring:

This year the Dutch Rock Band Golden Earring from Den Hague exists already for 50 years, which is most probably a world record for a band. This milestone (50 years Alive and Kicking) reminds me of the fantastic performances and albums they made. The members George Kooymans, Barry Hay, Rinus Gerritsen and Cesar Zuiderwijk managed to be 'the Stones of the lowlands'. The breakthrough came with their hits Back Home launched in 1970 after their tour in the States and Radar Love in 1974. Not only these but also other hits were fabulous such as Another 45 Miles, Yellow And Blue, Eight Miles High, Long Blond Animal, She Flies On Strange Wings, Long Blond Animal, When The Lady Smiles and Twilight Zone are some of my many favourites. They toured together with Janis Joplin, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Santana and The Who. In 1992 Bill Clinton chose Radar Love for his campaign and Hillary chose When The Lady Smiles for her campaign for the US presidency of 2008. The video for this song, shot by Dick Maas (movie The Elevator), was controversial. In one scene, a man attempts to rape a nun. This particular scene was quickly removed from the video (the full cut was only shown after midnight). Eelco Gelling from Cuby & The Blizzards, another favourite blues band of mine, shortly joined the band  and the Dutch Rock singer Anouk was actually discovered by Barry Hay. After 50 years The Earring is still Alive and Kicking.

Na enig speurwerk heb ik een aantal jeugdvrienden teruggevonden. Een daarvan is Tom Verwaart als muzikant pur sang bij de in 1968 opgerichte bluesgroep Magic Machine, daarna in de tweede bezetting in 1971 o.a. aangevuld met Hans de Wit op basgitaar (meestal een beetje uit de maat). De beste performance was de vertolking van I'm Going Home van Ten Years After, waarin Tom op z'n best was en zich helemaal kon uitleven. Herinneringen aan de bandrepetities in het jeugdhonk in de gasfabriek en de optredens van het bandje bij schoolfeesten. In die tijd kon je nog voor een paar honderd gulden ook Golden Earring of Earth & Fire en volgens mij ook Livin Blues voor een miniconcert contracteren, maar wij hadden voorkeur voor het vermaak met de schoolband. Tom maakte verder vanaf 1976 deel uit van de (Ierse) folkgroep Borecole, in 1980 zat hij in de groep Sweet Molly, vervolgens in Simple Simon en vanaf 1988 in Hit The Ceiling (hetkontakt). Optredens zijn zeer schaars, doorgaans om de 5 jaar. De laatste waren in 2004 en 2009, maar er is er weer een gepland voor 2014.

In de jeugdsociëteit De Bastille in Schoonhoven was het vooral op zondagmiddag prettig vertoeven; onderuitgezakt op de fauteuils of aan de bar en vooral relaxen. Gesprekken over van alles en nog wat met op de achtergrond onze favoriete muziek. Maggie May en Reason To Believe van Rod Stewart associeër ik nog steeds met de strips van Suske en Wiske. 

Bert Van Tuijl, jeugdvriend en collega bij Philips Eindhoven heeft zich via de offshore in Noorwegen uiteindelijk in Schotland gesettled. Ooit hebben we samen de 'hit' The Wish geschreven en daarvan een fantastische performance gegeven met minimale middelen. Een bewerking ervan is toegevoegd aan het repertoire van Magic Machine. 
Vandaag ontving ik een email van hem uit Aberdeen:

Het 'pre-garage' bandje The Wish of Wish Them, waar Bert van Tuijl, Niek .., Ronnie (Paling) Seelman, een zangeres (naam vergeten) en ikzelf in 'musiceerden' was niet echt een doorslaand succes, want het is niet lang na de oprichting weer ontbonden wegens geluidsoverlast bij omwonenden tijdens het repeteren in de garage bij ons thuis. De bewerkingen van Gloria en Venus van respectievelijk Them en Shocking Blue waren tijdens de repetities tot in de 'wijde omtrek' te horen.

Muziek speelde, althans voor mij, ook altijd een prominente rol tijdens kampeervakanties met Tom, Bert en Dolf in de vorm van gitaarsessies van soms 's middags tot 's avonds laat. Er werd meegejamd met o.a. A Horse With No Name (America), Stairway To Heaven (Led Zeppelin), The Needle And The Damage Done (Neil Young) en geluisterd naar Franse Folk.
We hebben ondergenoemde nummers grijsgedraaid op vinyl, en cassettebandjes niet te vergeten.

In jongerensociëteit Over De Brug in Gouda was het altijd een muzikale happening als Barrelhouse (Bailey’s Blues & Boogie Band) op het podium hun unieke bluessound ten gehore bracht. 

Midsummer Pop in Meerlo jaren '70

In mijn studietijd in Eindhoven heb ik mede door huisgenoot Hans .., die popjournalist was bij het Brabants Dagblad, unieke muzikale ervaringen meegekregen. Met name de 'studiopnamen' van Bots, het 'interview' voor de krant met de Rolling Stones, het 'in-house concert' op mijn gitaar van Herman van Loenhout (protestzanger Armand en roze Cadillac, 23 januari 2011 nog in DWDD-789), de 'ontmoeting' met Bertus Borgers die destijds ad-hoc deel uitmaakte van de Golden Earring, tijdens het 3-daagse Midsummer Pop in Meerlo (het Woodstock van Zd NL ergens rond 1974), backstage en in de kleurige 'magic bus' met de Slumberlandband. Deze popgroep die theatrale elementen gebruikte in optredens, belichting en aankleding is ontstaan uit de resten van folk/hippie band C.C.C. Inc., en had twee toekomstige Doe Maar-oprichters in haar gelederen. Te oordelen naar publiciteitsfoto’s uit die tijd zag de Slumberlandband er uit als een ‘troupe’ circusmuzikanten en de muziek is daar een auditieve voortzetting van. Pop, rock, theatermuziek en music hall werden vermengd met soms absurdistische en sprookjesachtige teksten, die met veel gevoel voor drama door zanger Friedrich Hlawatsch voor het voetlicht werden gebracht.

Het optreden tijdens het Midsummer popfestival in Meerlo van mijn favoriete band de folkrockgroep Fairport Convention met de prachtige leading vocals van de legendarische Sandy Denny was onvergetelijk.

Ook Pinkpop (3 dagen met veel regen met Bert van Tuijl?, Tom Verwaart en Dolf Jansen) was een happening om nooit meer te vergeten; wakker worden 's morgens op het festivalterrein met muziek van de Byrds. 
Indrukwekkend was ook het interview met Stevie Wonder door superfan van Stevie en jeugdvriend van mij Ton Sevenhoven in het Chelsea Harbour Hotel in Londen. Opmerkelijk is verder dat enkele jaren geleden Barry Hay (Golden Earring) en Harry Muskee (Cuby & The Blizzards) in Curacao als 'buren van' zijn opgedoken. 

Ierse Reggae-Folkband Mutefish

Een andere unieke ervaring was laatst de kennismaking tijdens een congres in Dublin met de 'onbevangen' psychedelische reggae folk van de Ierse band Mutefish (Mutefish & WebsiteMySpace & Video en mijn Columnary.blogpost).
